We share life with the friends we’ve met through St. Barnabas, visiting their homes and having dinner together at St. Barnabas once every month.

…and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. Isaiah 58:10 (NIV)

Situation in Hong Kong

According to the Gini Coeffecient, Hong Kong has the highest income gap between rich and poor of any developed economy in the world.

  • In 2011, the poorest 10% of Hong Kong made HK$2,1780 a month
  • The richest 10% made HK$137,580 a month
  • 1 in 5 people live below the poverty line
  • 1 in 4 children do not get three meals a day
  • 1 in 3 elderly struggle to meet their basic nutritional needs
  • Almost 20% of our city’s population can now be considered poor even though more than half of those families have one or more full-time workers in their household.
  • Despite government incentives and programs aimed at poverty alleviation, intergenerational poverty, food waste, alienation, stigma along with many other systemic and social issues to keep thousands of Hong Kongers living on the margins no matter how hard they work.

How SP responds?

  • SP responds to the poverty situation in Hong Kong by firstly acknowledging that poverty is as much a mental, social and emotional issue as it is a material one.
  • We realize that the same brokenness we see in our city resides in us as well and it is with this revelation do we attempt to tackle this very complicated issue.
  • We partner with St. Barnabas Society and Home in Sai Ying Poon. This organization has faithfully served the poor, the elderly and street sleepers in the central western district since 1987.
  • Once a month, we serve dinner and commune with the folks at their facilities, many of whom are elderly and enjoy spending time with younger folks.
  • Bi-monthly, we visit the homes of friends whom we’ve met through St. Barnabas and share life together.
  • We study, dream and practice together what it means to spend ourselves on behalf of each other and how this would cause our light to rise in the darkness.
