Shanti Neighbour Ministry

Good morning/afternoon SP! Today, I want to share about the Shanti Neighbour Ministry. The ministry visits a group of adults that live in a secluded facility due to their mental disability. When we visit them, we usually have worship, games, share a bible story, snacks and prayer time. Our goal is to share God’s love with them.

My favourite time is snacks and prayer time, because this is when we get to talk to the residents, get to know them and also to pray for them. Last time, when I was busy giving out the snacks, one of the residents pulled me aside and asked me to pray for her. She has not even gotten her snacks yet, but she was hungry for God. So of course, I said yes. I asked if she has ever prayed for herself, she said she didn’t know how to. So I taught her. I broke down my prayer in short phrases, I prayed one line, she repeated after me. At the end of it, I encouraged her to pray for herself every day, but she looked to me and asked “what if my prayer is wrong?” I explained that there is NO “wrong” prayer, and to my surprise, she immediately said “let me practise and try it for you to see.” She then closed her eyes, and just prayed for herself!

Until today, I still remember so clearly how much faith she had. Her prayer was simple, but so powerful. Praise the Lord!
There is a Chinese proverb that says, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Yes, we are there to love on them, but we are also there to point them to Jesus, so that they can have a lifelong intimate relationship with Jesus.

How did God speak to me?

I have only recently joined Shanti and every outreach is only about 2 hours, but God has been speaking to me so clearly.

God told me, “…So what if these residents are not “useful” so to speak because some of them do not have a job…or what if they are “stuck” in the facility forever because of their mental disability?” God is NOT even after what I can achieve (by my own efforts). God assured me that I do not have to worry about my own career, or what mistakes I have made. He is NOT after what job I have, what salary I can earn, how well I dress, what others think of me… God just wants my heart, my whole heart. Proverbs 23:26. And I just felt so blessed, because I was reminded that God loves us all the same.

SO! There is going to be a special Christmas outreach on December 3rd (a Saturday afternoon). I encourage all of you guys to join us! I don’t think we join outreach because we want to SERVE them, or even thinking what we are going to RECEIVE from them. Rather, it is really just a time for us to fellowship with our brothers and sisters, and to share with each other what mighty work God is doing in our lives.

If you are interested in joining, please do speak to me or Tim. You can also email the outreach team (the email address is printed on the bulletin) or you can sign up for Christmas outreach in the foyer after service. Thank you.
